Refund Information

Certain situations can result in a credit balance on a student's bursar account. This can be an outcome of:

From the date the credit is posted to your student bursar account, the refund is usually processed within 3-5 business days. Please view your account via One.IU for detailed information on your account. From the day you see the refund on your Bursar account, those students with direct deposit will generally see a credit in 3-5 business days. Otherwise, you should expect to receive a check in the mail in 10-14 business days.

Payments made by credit card resulting in a credit balance will be refunded via credit card, and should appear within 7-10 business days.

Financial aid will normally be credited to the student account ten (10) days prior to first day of classes. Refunds processing will begin immediately and will continue daily through the second week of classes. Beginning with the third week of classes, refunds will be processed each Friday to correspond with the weekly adjustment of financial aid. Exceptions to this weekly cycle for critical need and emergency situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.” This weekly cycle for refunds also allows students an opportunity to drop and add classes during the 7-day exchange period. For more information about the 7-day exchange and the impact on refunds, see our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Direct Deposit

Direct deposit allows you to receive your refund directly into your checking or savings account. Students with direct deposit generally receive refunds in their bank accounts 3-5 business days from the processing date shown on the student account. In order to safeguard student financial data, we have implemented two-factor authentication for student direct deposits.

Refund Policy

Students that drop courses may be eligible for a refund. Tuition and fee adjustments are determined by the date the course was successfully dropped. Financial aid refunds resulting from dropped courses may need further review by the Office of Student Financial Services to determine if the refund is appropriate or if aid needs adjusted for compliance reasons.

Students taking online courses who currently reside in a state other than Indiana may be subject to state-specific refund policies. Contact IUonline@iu.edu for state-specific online course refund policies.

If the refund check is not received within 10 business days from the date of the refund listed in One.IU, please refer to the stop payment form.

Direct deposit refunds are processed daily, and are more secure than paper checks. To learn how to set up direct deposit, view the tutorial or sign up on One.IU.

Reasons for possible delays in refunds

  • Eligibility problems:
    • Not enrolled in enough hours
    • Updates to class standing
  • Prior term debts
  • No signed Title IV Authorization form on file
  • Bad address on file
  • Not set up for direct deposit.
  • Flagged by Student Loan Administration: Past due loan debts, required exit interview, etc.

The "start date" has been established by the federal government as "the 10th day before the official start date for classes." Please also remember that our office receives new disbursements on a daily basis throughout the semester, so apply early to ensure your earliest possible receipt of funds. Make sure you have completed all check lists so aid can be issued without delay.
